Experience the Silence of Rebreather Diving
What is the Mares Horizon SCR
The Mares Horizon is a Semi-Closed Rebreather (SCR) designed for simplicity: easy to set up, transport, dive, and maintain. Its internal components are easily accessible, and the gas supply comes from one or two off-board cylinders (standard dive center tanks), giving an experience similar to sidemount diving.

Who is the Horizon SCR For
From marine life enthusiasts to underwater photographers, the Horizon is built for divers ready to go beyond open-circuit.

Recreational Divers
Observe marine life discreetly with a rebreather system supported by most dive destinations that provide nitrox. Enjoy extended bottom times with significantly fewer bubbles and minimal noise.

Photographers and Videographers
Capture natural marine behaviours without the disturbance of open-circuit bubbles. The Horizon gives you longer bottom time up to 30m or 40m depth, letting you focus on getting the perfect shot.

Entry to Rebreather Diving
If you are considering rebreather diving but want a lightweight, easy-to-use system, the Horizon is the ideal entry point. Simple setup, intuitive controls, and minimal maintenance make it accessible for divers ready to take the next step.
Advantages of Horizon SCR
Extended Dive Time
The Horizon acts as a nitrox extender, giving you significantly longer bottom time compared to open-circuit diving. Spend more time observing marine life and less time worrying about air consumption.
Lightweight and Travel-Friendly
At just 12kg empty, the Horizon does not require dedicated cylinders or weights. Combined with one regulator set (1.4kg), the total travel weight comes in under 23kg. Just use standard nitrox cylinders available at any dive destination.
Silent Diving Experience
Rebreather diving produces significantly fewer bubbles and less noise than open-circuit systems. Get closer to marine life, observe natural behaviours, and capture stunning photographs and videos without disturbing the underwater environment.
Fail-Safe and Intuitive
The Horizon features fail-safe gas operation, a built-in Bail-Out Valve (BOV) for emergency open-circuit breathing, and an intuitive Dive Controller interface. It creates a natural diving position and is easy to assemble and prepare for every dive.
How the Horizon SCR Works
Understanding the technology behind silent, extended-range diving.
Variable Flow SCR
The Mares Horizon is an active SCR with variable flow rates that maintain the desired fraction of oxygen in the breathing loop. The diver selects the nitrox mix for a particular dive and sets it in the computer. To maintain a constant loop FO2, the unit adjusts its flow rate between 5 and 30 litres per minute depending on the diver's metabolic rate.
A minimum flow rate of 5 l/min is maintained via the orifice at all times. When the oxygen fraction drops below the set point, the Electronic Addition Valve (EAV) opens and injects fresh nitrox until the fraction returns to the set point.
Depth and Time Limits
The Horizon supports diving within no-decompression limits or decompression dives up to a maximum depth of 40 metres. Two different gas mixes can be used to accelerate decompression: bottom gas for the descent and bottom phase, and decompression gas for the ascent phase. Both gases must have a minimum oxygen content of 30% and a maximum of 100%.
The Dive Controller
The Mares Horizon Dive Controller is a high-end, reliable dive computer that also configures and executes dives with the variable flow SCR. It allows the user to enter breathing gas data and define oxygen fraction setpoints to maintain during the dive.
Alarms and Warnings
A warning is issued when any dive parameter is outside its expected operating range, in situations where the diver's life is not in immediate danger. An alarm is displayed if a life-threatening situation occurs, requiring the diver to take immediate action.
The Bail-Out Valve (BOV)
If any problem arises with the Horizon, the diver can switch to the BOV. The Bail-Out Valve closes the breathing loop while automatically switching to a built-in second stage regulator, allowing the diver to breathe open-circuit without removing the loop from the mouth. The BOV uses the same gas that supplies the rest of the unit.
Scrubber: Absorbing CO2
The scrubber material removes carbon dioxide from exhaled breathing gas. The Mares Horizon features a unique dual-scrubber system with two canisters mounted in sequence, allowing gas to flow from the upper scrubber to the lower for efficient CO2 removal.
